The US government has mandated the stop of analog TV broadcast to allow the progress of digital television and has given the deadline of February 17, 2009 to the whole United States television broadcasting stations. Still a few months from today, but the first city in the United States to comply already was Wilmington in Delaware who has been running on Digital Television since September 8, 2008 at 12:00pm noon.

The decision why to go ahead with the transition many months before was that the broadcasting stations in the area were 98% digital TV ready which was coordinated effort between the TV broadcasting stations in Wilmington, DE and the first to implement digital TV in the United States was WILM-TV, ran by CBC – Raleigh, the same mother company of broadcasting station WRAL. And based on customer research, the TV viewers were 97% aware of the transition and were aware that those running on analog televisions would need a digital converter box to run digital TV.

Being the first city in the United States to run digital television along with its neighboring counties in Delaware: Bladen, Pender, Columbus, Brunswick and New Hanover counties, it needed some extra attention and does a press conference during the big switch. See video below of the event:

Today, Wilmington and neighboring counties are still running an analog signal but not showing TV programs but a message screen indicating that the analog signal has been discontinued and will need a digital converter box or use a modern digital TV to watch television. And also has a 1-800 number and other information about digital television. In the video above, the digital converter box used was a Channel Master DM-7000 which is one of the digital converter boxes queued for our review here at DigitalConverterReview.com.
